Thank you for your interest in our school. I hope this website will give you a glimpse of life at Charlotte House, and encourage you to visit us to see for yourself what we can offer your daughter. We hold Open Mornings during the school year where you can meet the staff, current parents and those who really know the school: the children themselves.
Our main entry is for three and four year olds. After parents have visited the school and registered their interest in a place, girls are invited to an informal meeting with the class teacher two terms prior to entry.
Occasional vacancies do occur in later age groups and girls joining at this stage are invited to spend a “taster” day to experience a range of activities, to meet the class and sample school life. There is also a short formal interview with the Headteacher. This allows both the school and the child to get to know each other.
Our girls are not selected on academic ability, but they achieve outstanding results in the national Key Stage 2 tests at the age of eleven. As our last school inspection pointed out, their results are far above the national average. This is because we have never lost sight of the basic essentials: the child’s need to feel a sense of achievement through good teaching which enables a confident learner to emerge.
We spend time preparing girls for leaving us and this process is actually enjoyed by the girls: we do not believe in stress here! If you talk to our current Form VI you will be delighted at their confidence and their whole approach to life, which comes from being given a sense of responsibility at an early age and knowing that they hold an important place in the school.
We are firmly convinced that children need a change of environment for their secondary schooling. There is no way you can predict a child’s potential at the age of three, but this becomes clearer by the time she reaches the age of nine or ten, and so all our Form VI girls go to a school that is the right one for them. Children need to mark the transition to the next level in their lives, to make new friends, to experience new teaching methods. Waiting for GCSE stage to experience your first external exam is not a good preparation: our girls have already learned that hard work brings success.
We have an excellent relationship with all local secondary schools, and these schools value our Charlotte House girls for their solid all-round educational standards and enthusiastic approach to life. Parents value the support and advice we offer them and they can rest easy, knowing that they have made the right choice for their child’s education when they reach secondary transfer. They can approach this process with confidence, knowing that we have an outstanding success rate at secondary transfer with 100% of girls going on to a school of their preferred choice.
Charlotte House girls transfer to a wide range of schools including Aldenham, Berkhamsted Collegiate, St Helen's, Northwood College, the Royal Masonic School, North London Collegiate, Haberdashers’ Aske’s, Wycombe Abbey, Pipers Corner, St Mary’s Gerrards Cross and Abbot's Hill. In the state sector girls have recently gone to Dr Challoner's High School, Watford Grammar School for Girls, Rickmansworth School, St. Clement Danes and St. Joan of Arc.
